A-B College and Philippi, WV: A Strong Relationship
Alderson-Broaddus has a long tradition of having great relations with the city of Philippi. Student volunteerism has always been at the forefront of Alderson-Broaddus’ mission. During the flood of 1985, the College cancelled classes and faculty, staff and students volunteered to help clean up the community. The Student Restaurant in Heiner Hall served food and Rex Pyles Arena was used as a shelter for those without homes. Students have assisted in other flood relief efforts and helped Philippi businesses on Main Street as well as Philippi residents move furniture, etc. to higher ground. Students assisted when the roof at Chestnut Ridge Community Center collapsed. They have also done tutoring and worked with the teen ministry program at Chestnut Ridge. Students have done repair work, fundraisers, food and clothing drives, assisted with mailings, and have helped unload emergency food deliveries for Heart and Hand. Several A-B campus groups and organizations such as Student In Free Enterprise (SIFE), the Student Government Association (SGA), Baptist Campus Ministries (BCM), Student Educators Association (SEA), Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), Alpha Beta Nu (ABN), Hu C. Myers Society, Collegiate 4-H, Chi Sigma Nu Sorority, Lamba Sigma Phi Sorority, Phi Kappa Delta Sorority, Phi Delta Sigma Fraternity, participate in community service projects throughout the year. Organizations and businesses in Philippi and Barbour County offer internship opportunities as well as student-teaching placement for our education majors. Our student teachers are out in the local classrooms every semester learning and observing to become successful teachers. The local area provides a great atmosphere for these types of learning experiences. Geographically, Philippi provides a great learning environment which is very accessible. Just thirty minutes away from Interstate 79, citizens and students have just a short drive to major shopping and other events. Come visit the campus and the city of Philippi and see for yourself what the College and the area has to offer educationally and recreationally. |
