Learning Resource Center Offers Assistance

Learning Resource CenterThe Learning Resource Center (LRC) offers counseling, tutoring and computer assisted instruction for general study skills and for specific courses. The LRC, located on the ground level of Pickett Library on the A-B campus, is staffed by a director and several students trained in tutoring techniques.

“The LRC offers tutoring either in groups or on an individual basis for all students, including those who are under prepared,” said Della Colantone, director of the Learning Resource Center . “Students can come to the LRC for one-time tutoring or make arrangements for tutoring throughout the semester. Students can also develop an individualized approach to college by analyzing their learning style, their prior knowledge, their strengths, and their goals.”

The Academic Support Network (ASN) is also coordinated through the LRC. Students in the ASN program have an individualized academic plan, consisting of no more than 12 semester hours. Such a plan would include a one-credit course, General Studies 100 “Study Skills” and may include English 180 “Language Skills,” Language Arts 100 “Reading Skills”, and/or Mathematics 110 “Basic Algebra.”

“Officially students remain in the Academic Support Network for only one semester, but the developmental classes, particularly General Studies 100, are designed to help students develop their own support networks,” said Colantone.

Student success is important here at Alderson-Broaddus. With programs like the Learning Resource Center, we strive to ensure students are receiving a quality education in a caring environment.
